Why Some Win and Some Lose Wars: The Real Secret of Military Successes/Victory

So, after having studied and practised warfare for at least the large chunk of my life, I finally came to deeper understanding of the phenomenon. As all along the time ever since, I have kept asking myself why some win and some lose? Is there a real, tangible, secret behind such an explanation? Is it explainable via techno-strength or numerical strength (god is on the side of bigger battallions, so proclaimed Napoleon)? Is it due primarily to the generals/leadership intelligence, the geniuses of Clausewitz? Moral factors? Righteous Causes? etc? The answer I found was so simple that many have continously attributed it’s significance but fell short in understanding it’s real value: The Will To Fight.

The ‘will to fight’, in short, is what defines who wins or lose.

The west have always had the will to fight, and justify it, and by strenghtening the trinity equilibrium (Government-Army-Subjects); that, if it is strong all around, they always win; if not they will always lose (Afghanistan, Vietnam, Iraq etc). Arreguin-Toft study, How The Weak Win Against The Strong, is filled with all razzle-dazzle traditions of academic-marketing of ideas, but alas, as many falls short in observing the actual truth of why some win and some lose.

In short, there is no ”military excellence”, either in modelling, theories, ‘genius’ commanders, states, armies, operational arts, technologies-indiuced, culture and so forth; all these are military history and community myths, created to serve the morale of the fighting personnel. In other words, a rag-tag group of 100 peasants with not a single previous military training, or education among them, can fight and win, if the ‘will to fight’ is present within the group as a whole (and their sorrounding population) against a 100’000 strong, technological superior and most advanced army in the world. This is the truth.

In sum, there are no secrets, not mystifying attributes, or ‘fighting blood’, or militarily advanced in education or training, but it all comes down to who has the ‘will to fight’ it to the last (and win); especially without losing such a unity of a (trinity) ‘will to fight’ within. I will be exploring and extending the thesis further on my paper.

Well, usual headlines selections (they found water in Africa, well you know what that means, the continuing colonialisation of the poor region);
