A Reading Recommendation: Get The Dynamics of The Present From The Past

I would recommend a small essay by Professor Holger H. Herwig ‘Strategic uncertainties of a nation-state: Prussia-Germany, 1870-1918‘, Chapter 9 on Murray, W., Knox, M. & Bernstein, A. (ed.) (1994) The Making of Strategy: Rulers, States, and War, CUP: Cambridge. pp. 242-277.

Though the essay concerns itself with aforementioned period and actor, it actually provides an excellent picture in understanding the contemporary, and even past (you might want to read the entire 600 pp. book, for this, though) international and security affairs; how one actor’s hyper-militarism, in each generation, can be a threat to it’s own existentialism nature and that of the international security, peace and order.

I will specifically recommend, for those seeking a much smaller reading, the sub-chapter of the chapter (9), entitled ‘The External Threat’, absolutely fantastic, is like having your own chair inside the ‘situation room’, or any ‘corridors and offices of powers’ in Washington (and to some extent, though, of a lesser relevance, Paris, Brussels and London).

Also, see e-library for Ferdinand Foch ‘principles of War‘, and the little chapter ‘On Modern War‘, just brilliant, on the nature of commercialisation of Military affairs/policy. The chapter supports Prof. Herwig thesis, since it too is based on the analysis of the same period, same actor and same environment.

Enjoy, and here is some few interesting headlines for you;
